Un ami, l'Amiral Bérard, conservateur du musée Lapérouse vient de me communiquer la photo d'une peinture représentant le Commerce de Marseille avec les couleurs du Roi, seule représentation connue à ce jour à part celle, anglaise, du National Maritime Muséum reproduite dans la mono.
Cette peinture est conservée au chateau de Saint-Géry à 30 km de mon domicile alors que j'ai vainement cherché un portrait de ce vaisseau dans les archives françaises...
Voici donc ces deux photos ainsi que les liens vers des exemplaires en 1650 pixels de largeur:

La peinture française en 800 pix. Notez le pavoisement fleurdelysé et la première batterie peinte en noir comme sur la gravure anglaise. Le beaupré semble exagérement long et l'artimon est à brigantine mais il n'existe aucune date sur cette peinture qui a dû être réalisée, comme souvent, après sa capture :

Admiral Bérard who is a friend of mine from the Lapérouse Museum just sent me a photo of a painting showing Le Commerce de Marseille with the King’s colours.  It is the only known representation except for the British painting kept at the NMM that is shown in the monograph.
This painting is kept at the Saint-Géry Castle which is located just 30km from my place although I looked for a representation of the vessel through the French archives…..
So here are the 2 photos as well as links to a link to larger format images.

The French painting.  Note the “Fleur de Lys” ensigns and flag and the black painted first battery (as can be seen on the British version).  The bowsprit seems to be too long and the mizzen is fitted “brig” style.  The painting is not dated but was most likely done after capture.




La gravure anglaise, plus naïve. On remarquera le pavillon national type 1793 : pavillon blanc avec un quartier tricolore. L'artimon porte une antenne, plus conforme au règlement en cours lors de la capture. Cette gravure est datée de 1802 :

The british painting.  We note the 1793 type flag; white with a tricolor section.  The mizen yard conforms to the establishment in effect at the time of capture.  This painting is dated from 1802:
